How Tai Chi Breathing Technique Benefited Me Print E-mail

I am a mature senior citizen, and have been learning Tai Chi for a few months. A few weeks ago, my daughter, her husband and I decided to climb Mt William – a very steep mountain in the Grampians. It is about 3.5 kilometres from the bottom to the top. The first part of the climb, which was a little bit less than 1 kilometre, I just made it with difficulty. I thought that I had better not go any further. I sat on a rock and decided to wait for them to come down.

But then I thought I could try it and put my Tai Chi breathing technique to the test. I am proud to say that I made it to the top with greater ease. My daughter could hardly believe it when she saw me at the top of the mountain. She and her husband were extremely impressed.

The secret “being” Repetition,  Repetition, Repetition, and as the saying goes there is nothing whatsoever that is not made easier through familiarity. How many of us think about what it is that brings us back time and time again to practice as a group in harmony and great fellowship. In reality each individual is on their own journey of discovery of the mind body relationship of the form that brings about Tranquility – Harmony – Meditative Peace – Balance and above all Joy. Like all things that are worthwhile they can, and usually do, take time and dedication to achieve.

Park Lessons - What can I expect? Print E-mail
Park Lessons - What can I expect?
Fresh air, new Chi
At the end of every term the college provides two free park lessons, one on a Saturday at Malvern and the other on a Sunday at Fairfield.

If you haven’t been to a park lesson before, I can highly recommend the experience, if you have been, then you already know of the benefits coming together with others from various centres and exercising in the open air brings with it. There is little more exhilarating yet at the same time relaxing as Tai Chi in the park.

Tai Chi and the Stress Cycle
Release the Stress
I have been a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine for almost eighteen years.  Over these years I have observed that more and more people who come for treatment are presenting with conditions that have a clear relationship to stress.  That stress may be work, financial, personal or physically based.

Tai Chi in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China Print E-mail
Tai Chi in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China.
Creeping down..
My wife and I spent a wonderful two weeks in Yunnan Province in SW China, early last month. We travelled with a group of 10 friends, one of whom is a Tai Chi student in Hobart, and had the luxury of local guides each day. We were amazed at the lack of pollution in this remote area of China that is a food bowl for much of the country, a large exporter of cut flowers, home of many of China’s Minority People, and is fast becoming a new Mecca for tourists.

One of the features of cities such as Kunming, Dali, Lijiang, and Zhongdian (better known as Shangri-La) in Yunnan Province, are the old towns in the centre of the cities, together with the town markets, that are full of vibrant colours and people in traditional clothes. However, the highlight for me was the second morning in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan with a population of about 3 million people.

Tai Chi On The Go - Dorothy Patel Print E-mail

Dorothy on tour
On our arrival in Hanoi I was very pleasantly surprised to learn that we could join the locals in practicing Tai Chi around the Beautiful Hoan Kiem Lake.

What a wonderful sight greeted us when we arrived to see thousands of people of all ages practising Tai Chi, exercising, playing badminton etc. We joined a group of ladies practising Shibashi-type exercises for about 40 minutes – a wonderful start to the day!

To continue this regime in Hoi An, Danang and Ho Chi Minh City we formed our own little group and practised Tai Chi by the pool, or the beautiful tropical gardens where we were staying. For some of the ladies it was their first experience and a wonderful introduction to Tai Chi.

Tai Chi at Kindergarten - Suzette Hosken Print E-mail

Suzette Hosken addressing Kinder
Recently I had the pleasure of teaching tai chi to a group of four- and five-year-olds at my son’s kinder. What a pleasure and a privilege it was. The director of the kindergarten runs a multicultural program, and during October the children were learning about China, so a demonstration of tai chi was most apt.

The large group of children was divided into two groups of twelve and thirteen - in part to give us more room, but mainly to facilitate the children’s concentration. They are very easily distracted by each other at this age. I would have been very easily distracted, too, if I had been put in front of twenty-five children!
